Too often I find myself saying, “I can’t wait til _______.”
You too? We all say it. Especially when it comes to our children it seems:
“I can’t wait til he can hold his head up.”
“I can’t wait til she giggles!”
“I can’t wait til he says his first words!”
“I can’t wait til she’s able to walk!”
Sounds fairly harmless but if you sit and think about it, you’re wishing life away. Yes, all these things are very exciting, no doubt about it! But you CAN wait. If that time were to come now, that time you can’t wait for, then your little one won’t be so little anymore. Since I’ve had Little Man, I’ve realized just how much I say this seemingly harmless phrase.
Now let me clarify, I’m not saying that this phrase is harm-FULL (I know that’s not how you spell it…I’m being dramatic, go with it.) But it can do some”damage” to your state of mind. If you’re living in a perpetual state of can’t wait (rhyme!) you’re not living in the NOW. I constantly find myself having to slow down. To remind myself to CHILL. ENJOY NOW!
Another thing for me is my impatience with things to do around the house. I am a neat freak, OCD, organized, get-anxiety-around-clutter kind of person. (I say all those things with pride!) No seriously, I FREAK OUT around messes and clutter. I can’t watch Hoarders because of it.
So now that you know that…
My husband and I recently decided to stay in our apartment for another year instead of getting a house. We were disappointed but it just made sense. My husband had changed to a very stressful position at work, we had just had Little Man, and our lease was coming to an end. Moving was just out of the question. So now we (mainly ME) want to de-clutter and reorganize so that we can mix it up a bit and not get bored with how everything looks. But I want it done now!
If it were up to me, I’d go through the entire place in one day. I will go and go and go until I feel like the clutter is gone. But my husband likes to take time to go through each thing and enjoy what he finds. Of course I love that too, but I’m impatient. I’ll enjoy it when I’m done. Plus, not everything is mine. I want him to have a say in what stays and what goes, but he works a lot. So we have to do this VERY slowly, one area at a time per weekend. It’s killing me. But I have to remember the fact that it will get done. Not in my time frame, but it will get done. We have PLENTY of time to go through everything, a whole YEAR!
And that’s what I want to stress out of everything I’ve just rambled on about. There is PLENTY of time. Yes, life is short…but there is time for everything. It just takes a little reminder sometimes.
So the next time you find yourself saying, “I can’t wait til _____!”, rephrase. ”I’m excited for_______” is the particular rephrasing I use. Whatever works for you to remind yourself to take it easy and savor the day. Some days suck, yes, but you’re here and you have family and friends, and tomorrow is a new day.
But there is only one RIGHT NOW. Relish in the now!
