It’s been one of those days where you go and go and go…before you know it, it’s 5PM.
 
So I’ll make this short and sweet!
 
I found these cute little metal bowls at the thrift store and knew I had to do something with them. ($0.99 each!)
 
Recently I did one of those projects where you glue a candlestick to something else and it turns into awesomeness (post for tomorrow), and that got me thinkin….
 
Turn the bowl slowly and tap the edges to get a drip effect.
 
Let the paint dry and glue one on top of the other!
 
Fill and ENJOY!
**If you’re keeping track, the last 2 projects costs me a whopping $4 all together!**

I must admit that this is not a “true” thrifty Thursday in the sense that I bought these items at a thrift store/garage sale.  BUT it is in the sense that I was BEING thrifty! (I sure hope that made sense!)
 
Anyway!
 
There are tons of pins out there on how to make your own earring holder.  I made one and really liked…for awhile…it now looks like this:
WAY too messy for me!
 
I recently became the owner of ALL of my grandmother’s old lace tablecloths, doilies, etc.  You can find these kind of items at most thrift stores for very cheap!
 
Part of this collection was a set of window valances that I don’t really have a use for at the moment.  One of them had a hole or two bigger than it should be and instead of chucking it, I decided to put it to good use.
 
Found this frame on uber-clearance at Hobby Lobby!
Pull the lace tightly so that it will be able to hold multiple earrings.
I used a tab from a soda can for a hanger.
DISPLAY!

Since I haven’t really been diligent about my thrifting recently, I haven’t really had anything to recreate.  (I did, however, recently find 2 pairs of shoes that I LOVE that are thrifted! You’ll see them tomorrow!)
 
But that got me thinking about today’s post.
 
Sometimes you find gems that don’t need recreating.  Even if they’re worn out, they have a charm that makes you smile when you look at them.  It definitely takes patience and many frequent trips, but that’s the fun!
 
So today I thought I’d share some finds that the Hubster and I have found that brighten our home with their unique beauty!

Thrifty Thursday: Vintage Patchwork Suitcase

I am SO excited about this find!  We don’t really have “thrift” stores around here…you know, eclectic and funky…cool stuff.  But we do have the Goodwill which, on occasion, will produce a fabulous gem.  Like this!

Anyway…
 
She definitely needed a makeover though…
 
So here’s what I did.
 
First I messed up, ROYALLY!
 
But then…
 
Break out the Modge Podge!  (If you have this kind…please do it outside!!!  FUMES GALORE!)
 
Start placing things wherever you like until you’re satisfied with the look and finish with a top coat of Modge Podge.
 
I think I’m going to start collecting suitcases because I just love this one!

Thrifty Thursday: Refinished Desk

A few weeks ago I posted that we’re in the process of re-doing our apartment since we decided not to move this year.  We needed some sprucing up and change…and a new desk.  
 
We were able to purchase a refurbished Mac for a VERY good price but it was too big for our old desk.  Solution? New desk! (preferably without a hutch this time) 
We found the perfect desk at a local antique store for a ridiculously good price.  The trick? Be patient.  (I think that’s my trick to most things. LOL)  But look around, don’t jump on the first thing you find.  Unless, of course, the first thing you find is perfect and an awesome price! 
 
But she did need some sprucing up…
 
Instead of painting the ENTIRE desk, which would have been a very long project, I went with something different and fun!
 
First I painted the fronts of the drawers.
 
Then for the top, I was inspired by one of my projects from my DIY to-do list!
 
I painted my favorite pattern…CHEVRON! (pretty obsessed with it)
 
New knobs…
 
I wish I could have gotten new pulls but the previous owner painted/glued them in place.  :(
 
And here she is!
 
I’m in LOVE!!!

I read a fun tip from another blog about using vintage looking sheets for photo backgrounds.  I knew that was something I had to try and, as you can tell, I have.  I was so excited when I found these VERY cheap sheets at a thrift store while in Athens.  I mean CHEAP, like $2.99. SO EXCITED!  However, one of my purchases was a valance/bed skirt-esque/not really sure.  And there were 3 of them.  All different lengths, shapes….confusing but I still really liked them.  But I didn’t need 3 of the same print.  What to do?  So I pulled out my handy (miniature) sewing machine, soon to be replaced by my grandmother’s fab one, and started pinning together a fun new apron!
 
I also cut a fabric doily in half to create pockets!

Thrifty Thursday: Repurposed Frame

I know this is supposed to be a monthly post but I was too excited about my find…and it’s Thursday! SOOOOO…
 
I love going to a thrift store to find random items and this frame has to be one of my favorites.  As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it!  But what to do with it?
 
Originally, I wanted to paint a quote on fabric to put inside…but that didn’t work.
Then I thought about just painting a heart….but that didn’t look right.
Then I remembered something that I tried off Pinterest a while back and loved.  So I did it again! Here it is:
 
Grab these things:
 
(Note the green paint…that was for the first two ideas.  This is the only time you’ll see it.) :)
 
Paint the frame any color you choose.  I tend to stick with white because it goes with just about anything.  I think I may go more colorful next time…who knows?
 
It make take a few coats.  This frame definitely required about 3-4.
 
Use the glass from the frame to trace out the correct size of fabric.  I love the look of burlap, gives a rustic charm.  You could also use pretty scrapbook paper!
 
Place fabric behind glass and write a message, quote, anything you’d like.
 
** Just make sure that if you want to write other things in the future, use a dry erase marker. **

Thrifty Thursday: DIY Fabric Scrap Wreath

For this month’s Thrifty Thursday, I’ve repurposed an old wrap skirt I bought at a Goodwill about 3 or 4 years ago.  I can’t tell you why I bought it because it had a hole and stitching where another hole had been (somehow missed it) AND I have literally NEVER worn it…in the 3 or 4 years that I have owned it, NEVER.  (I also have no idea why I’ve never gotten rid of it…) BUT it serves a (re)purpose today!
 
I’ve wanted to do one of these wreaths for a while now and when I started to think about what I wanted to do for TT (Thrifty Thursday), it all came together…
 
First gather your materials:
 
(doesn’t necessarily have to be a skirt…old shirts, dresses, etc. will work just fine)
 
If you don’t want to do this next step, and embroidery hoop will work too.  
However, I’m ALL ABOUT saving money and I already had this wire/twine stuff. :)
Take the wired twine and make a circle (any size you like)…
 
Cut more wire and wrap it around the circle until you feel it’s thick enough.
 
Now cut your old clothes into strips.  Depending on how thick your wreath is, will be how long you’ll need to cut the strips for tying.
 
(the skirt was quite large…I have plenty of leftover fabric!)
Then….TIE TIE TIE!…..
 
………TIE TIE TIE………
 
Fill in any gaps and fluff up the ends!
 
I love that this skirt just so happened to be appropriate for the summer/Fourth of July season!

Thrifty Thursday — Ruined to Renewed

Thrifty Thursday is my other monthly post….just like Makeover Mondays!  For this post, you’ll see treasures I’ve found at thrift stores, antique shops, garage sales, etc. and how you can spruce them up, reuse them, or make them part of your decor…let’s get started!
 
Recently I found a small amount of lace trim at an antique store that was perfect for a project at home.  (Major score since it was only $3!)
 
My wonderful cat likes to eat my clothes…weird, I know….and he had recently taken a chunk out of one of my favorite cardigans….
 
So here’s what I did with it!
 
Since the lace wasn’t wide enough, I pinned up the bottom half of the sweater where Tybalt ate it, .  Then, pinned the lace across the bottom and ran it through the sewing machine.  (Love my mini sewing machine! $14 find at Walgreens!)
 
And TA-DA! Brand new sweater sans GIANT kitty munch!
